Artist Statement
The Spring Prelude 2009 Collection connects specific eras and societies through design elements within a garment. Drawing upon styles ranging from depression era immigrant garments to european upper class attire from the 1800's, I mentally gathered glimpses of these time periods and visually combined them with present-day sensibilities to create the collection before you. The purpose of garments, in my mind, should be to celebrate everyday life while respecting ourselves and those around us through the way we dress. Garments have often been used as a tool to reinforce artificial societal hierarchies; this collection is meant to blur such distinctions and combine all things I find aesthetically pleasing from various eras and subcultures.
Juxtapositions within the collection develop this idea, seen in the combination of homespun-like textured linen in trousers worn alongside brocade jackets, or the purposely crumpled pleats worn in a silk taffeta. The result is a collection filled with versatile new designs and fabric meant for sublime once-in-a-lifetime occasions, as well as casual everyday wear. The same garments can be worn for all occasions in life, depending upon how they are mixed together.
May you find freedom and a deeper way of expressing yourself this season.
